Why this list is short.

Four resources. That's not an oversight, and it's not because painting is unimportant — it's because most "digital painting" tutorials teach rendering technique dressed up as painting instruction, and this collection filters them out.

What's here, and why:

Two brush packs (Jon Neimeister's digital oils). Tools, not lessons — but the right tools. Neimeister's oils are included twice because the source has both a landing page and a direct pack, and for a category this small, redundancy beats a dead link. These are for artists who already know how to render and want brush behavior that simulates traditional oil dynamics.

Two RossDraws technique tutorials (skin and hair). These are the actual instructional content. Ross's approach is practical and fast: base shapes, color selection, layering, finishing. Neither pretends to be a complete painting course, and neither needs to be. They are focused technique breakdowns for two of the hardest surfaces to paint convincingly.

What's deliberately absent: "digital painting fundamentals" courses that spend forty minutes on software navigation, speed-painting timelapses with no narration, and "paint-over" tutorials that teach tracing rather than painting from scratch. You won't find them here because they don't help you paint — they help you feel productive while watching someone else paint.

If you want a comprehensive painting curriculum, this category won't provide it, and saying so honestly is more useful than padding the list. Pair it with the fundamentals category for construction, and use these four for the rendering-specific problems (skin, hair, brush behavior) that fundamentals don't cover.
